Donation pathways
Organ and tissue donation
What can be donated, the age criteria for each organ and tissue, and what rules a patient out. Organ donation is only possible when a person dies in ICU and is on a ventilator.
Tissue-only donation
Most patients who die in the ICU, and many who die on the wards, can be considered for tissue donation.
Eye tissue donation
Patients aged 10 to 85. Possible in hospitals, hospices, funeral homes and communities throughout New Zealand.
Skin tissue donation
Patients aged 10 and over, with no upper age limit. Facilitated in the Auckland City and Waikato Hospitals only.
Cardiovascular tissue donation
Patients 3.5 kg and over, up to 70 years.
